Drone Ranger, Securing the Last Inch in Autonomous Package Delivery

As a kid growing up in Naperville, Ill., a western suburb of Chicago, Ryan Walsh spent many hours devouring books on famous people in history. He loved reading about the “magnificent lives” of people such as Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Greek war leader Leonidas I. And he realized that he had something in common with every one of them.

“All of these people had two legs, two arms and a brain, just like I do,” he told himself. “What makes them capable of such great achievements and not me?”

Illinois Man Building Mailboxes For Drone Delivery

Drone delivery has been in the works for quite some time now. One man may be revolutionizing how drones make deliveries by building a mailbox that is equipped to allow drones to make deliveries to your door.

Ryan Walsh, of Naperville, and partner Alexander Flasesch co-invented the Smart Drone Delivery mailbox, a receptacle that replaces the traditional mailbox in front of people’s homes to allow drones to land for package delivery and pick up.

In 2017, the two men co-founded Valqari, a start-up focused on the ensuring packages that arrive at a destination safely remain secured and out of the elements until the recipient retrieves them from the box.

The Drone Trainer Podcast 059 – Ryan Walsh

Welcome to episode 59 of The Drone Trainer Podcast! This week we’re going to discuss drone delivery with Ryan Walsh, CEO of Valqari based in Chicago. Check this episode out and subscribe on iTunes or Google Play so that you don’t miss this or any of the future podcast episodes!

Ryan Walsh is the CEO of Valqari, a drone delivery solution based in Chicago, Illinois. Ryan and his team have developed a drone delivery solution to solve the last mile or last meter problem. I have to admit, before speaking with Ryan today, I had been very skeptical of drone delivery as a whole. I could predict its success in rural environments, but the urban environment was where I predicted it would be difficult to impossible.

Valqari’s New Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox

A new invention, Owning a drone delivery mailbox might seem like it would be a future invention, but thanks to drone delivery solutions company, Valqari, it’s not too far fetched.

The Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox is a new invention created by the company’s co-founder Ryan Walsh.

“Back in 2013, we were really seeing how drones were starting to become a little more developed and some of the technology. People were starting to use them for different delivery use cases, so we began looking at some of the overlooked areas and specifically the infrastructure,” said Walsh.

Patented Drone Delivery Mailbox Offers Standardized Landing Zone

Valqari—a Chicago-based startup company—has unveiled its patented Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox, which provides a standardized, safe and secure landing area for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) deliveries.

The universal receptacle handles both package delivery and pick-up by drone. Valqari said its technology could revolutionize drone delivery for industries such as pharmaceuticals, meal delivery and grocery services—in both the government and e-commerce sectors.

“We knew the biggest hurdle facing drone delivery was that there was no standardized, safe and secure landing area,” said Ryan Walsh, Valqari CEO and co-founder. “This gave us a clear vision from the start that our mission would be to provide the missing piece to the last stage drone delivery process.”

Valqari Launches the First Solution for Drone Delivery’s Last Inch Logistic Problems

The Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox holds U.S. and international patents for safe and secure drone deliveries

Valqari, a Chicago-based start-up, has solved the last inch logistic problems associated with drone delivery with its patented Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox, a universal drone receptacle for package delivery and pick-up. Backed with a strong international patent portfolio, the smart mailbox features agnostic capabilities to ensure seamless integration and communication with any drone manufacturer during a fully-automated delivery process. It is a concept that gives Valqari the ability to revolutionize drone deliveries for industries including pharmaceuticals, meal delivery and grocery services, governments and residential e-commerce.

This technology also puts Valqari ahead of major players, like Google, Amazon and Uber, when it comes to the end process of a drone delivery.

This Startup Is Building a Smart Mailbox for Your Drone Deliveries

Amazon made headlines in 2013 when it unveiled a plan to deliver packages by drone during a segment on 60 Minutes. Amazon said at the time that we could expect drones to bring our Prime orders within “four or five years,” a bold prediction from CEO Jeff Bezos that’s proved to be a little too bold.

But that initial 60 Minutes segment kickstarted a drone delivery movement that appears to be progressing, even if at a snail’s pace. Earlier this month Google’s parent company Alphabet secured approval for drone delivery in Australia. Alphabet’s drone service, called Wing, plans to deliver customers items like fresh food, coffee, ice cream and medicine, and around 100 homes in the city of Canberra will be eligible for the service.

That’s because Valqari, which describes itself as the “creator of the patented Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox and provider of last-inch solutions for drone deliveries,” is working with Sprint on a smart mailbox connected to the telecom’s HTC 5G Hub.

According to a statement on Wednesday (Sept. 11) from the two companies, “the blazing-fast, high-capacity mobile speeds provided by Sprint’s 5G will be essential for making autonomous drone deliveries to smart mailboxes successful. Valqari’s Smart Drone Delivery Mailbox will use 5G LTE connectivity to ensure seamless communication with drones for a fully automated delivery process while also providing a reliable, universal drone receptacle for package delivery and pickup.”

Peachtree Corners Officially Opens Self-Driving Vehicle Test Track

On Wednesday morning, two drones flew a large red ribbon over Peachtree Corners City Hall and to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the city’s autonomous vehicle research center.

Curiosity Lab, a city-funded research center and incubator focusing on self-driving vehicles and other transportation technology, officially opened with Wednesday’s ceremony. The project has been in the works for more than a year, and it’s already attracted partnerships with companies including Sprint, Delta and Georgia Power. About 300 people attended the Wednesday event, including Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Georgia Power CEO Paul Bowers.

The $2 million test track runs alongside Technology Parkway, separating regular traffic from test vehicles with large white cones. The track is just off Peachtree Parkway and near office and residential space, providing a variety of scenarios to test vehicles in, said City Manager Brian Johnson.

Creating the Mailbox of The Future

Two Illinois firms have partnered to bring a modern mailbox for the drone delivery market to life.

So much of our lives has improved thanks to recent innovations in technology. Simple, mundane devices and appliances have suddenly become “smart.” Our TVs, doorbells, thermostats and refrigerators send notifications to our smartphones and allow us to change settings from anywhere in the world. In the age of ecommerce and emerging drone delivery technology, two young inventors from Chicagoland and their startup, Valqari, decided it was time to modernize the mailbox for the 21st century. They partnered with East Peoria, Illinois’ INTEGRIS Engineering to help bring their smart drone delivery mailbox to life.

The RCVR-PAD is Valqari’s solution to the risks associated with drone delivery. A platform which can rest in a window, or stand-alone mailbox, allows drones to land and release packages into a secured and lockable device, preventing theft or damage to the items delivered.
